Admissions & Financial Aid

Admissions

How to become a Spartan:  Office of Admissions.

Undergraduate applications for admission should be submitted to the Office of Admissions at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the desired semester.

Graduate applicants for admission should contact the department/college of their choice for an application deadline date. Graduate applications need to be received by the Office of Admissions at least two months prior to the first expected enrollment. Individual departments may have earlier deadlines.

International graduate and undergraduate applicants, due to visa considerations, should file their applications for admission as early as possible.

Guest Students: Students who are not now and are not seeking to become regular degree candidates at MSU but wish to attend MSU during the summer as a guest should register as Lifelong Education students. Students applying for Lifelong status are not required to submit transcripts of prior education, and there is no application fee.

Review the Lifelong Education regulations and then complete the web application. Hardcopy applications are available in the Office of Registrar, 150 Administration Building, 517-355-3300.
  • Be sure to apply at least one week before the course begins.
  • Applications will be processed in 3-5 working days by the Office of the Registrar. Please note completion of an application online does not result in instantaneous admission. Processing involves an admissions review procedure in addition to the clerical processing. Access to MSU’s email and ANGEL course systems will be available 48 business hours after admission to the LE enrollment status.
  • Upon acceptance, student will receive a letter or email from the Office of the Registrar with the information needed to enroll for classes.
  • Registration bills are only available electronically within STUINFO. Registration bills are not mailed.
  • Registration is complete only when the registration bill has been paid by the listed due date. If a student’s registration bill is not paid by the due date, all classes will be dropped. If no payment is required, attendance must be confirmed in STUINFO by the due date or all classes will be dropped.
  • Students enrolling under Lifelong Education status are not charged late enrollment fees.
Michigan State University will not issue an I-20 for Lifelong Education applicants who apply from outside the United States.

Students enrolling as Lifelong Education may contact Patty Gneiting for assistance by email at gneiting@msu.edu or by telephone at  517 355-7709.
